Sarah has years of specialized experience working with struggling readers in grades 4-8. Students who need foundational literacy skills into their tween and teen years do best with teachers that understand and honor the emotional toll around their years of struggle, recognize the knowledge and skills they have developed, and use materials that are appropriate for their age level. We can meet the needs of older students, and students that are feeling frustrated about reading.
Sarah uses a variety of instructional strategies and curriculums to meet the needs of students. Our philosophy is rooted in Orton-Gillingham methods and defined by Science of Reading research. Our reading specialist has 20+ years of experience and is trained in a variety of evidenced-based curriculums including Lindamood-Bell, SIPPS, and the Wilson Reading System. For spelling, we use a developmental approach as utilized in spelling programs like Words Their Way. We also use a variety of phonics readers to match the skills and interests of students. Our reading specialist is able to tailor instruction to the needs of each child with a focus on their progress.
If you have been watching your child struggle at school because of reading or writing, it is important to support both their individual needs in tutoring and create opportunities for increased learning and participation at school. As a veteran classroom teacher, our reading specialist understands “grade-level” demands and how to help students navigate school. As much as possible, we provide instruction that helps students transfer their learning from tutoring to school.
